Gold & the Exchange
Since year 100 (October 20, 2026) Dynasty has gold bars. Gold is physical: each bar is on a player, in a safe deposit box, on sale in a Gold Exchange or in a State's reserve, and it moves between those four places without ever being lost. New bars come from a nation's Gold Mine.
You trade it on the Exchange page. Open it from the menu, in the Wealth group between Finance and Map, or from All. Every nation has its own Gold Exchange, and you always trade in the one of the nation you are in.

Where the Gold Comes From
At the launch, in year 100, every State received a gold reserve of 2 bars per active citizen (rounded down), and put a tenth of it on sale in its own Gold Exchange at $10,000 per bar:
| Nation | Starting reserve | Put on sale by the State | Gold cap at launch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vitalia | 48 bars | 4 | 120 |
| Dynamis | 62 bars | 6 | 156 |
| Fortis | 41 bars | 4 | 103 |
| World | 151 bars | 14 |
- Active citizens are the average number of players holding that nation's passport who played each day, over the last 30 days. They are counted again at every year change.
- A nation's gold cap is 5 bars per active citizen, its starting reserve included. It moves at every year change with the active citizens.
- After the launch, new gold comes from a Gold Mine, until the nation has had as much gold as its cap. Every new bar goes into the State reserve.
The Exchange Page
The Exchange opens on the Gold Exchange of the nation you are in. From top to bottom:
- My gold bars — how many you have on you (out of 5), in your safe deposit box and on sale, and how much room you have left.
- Member of parliament — only if you have the MPs' limit: how many of your 2 bars you have used, and until which year the limit lasts.
- {Nation} Gold Exchange — the reference price, the allowed prices, the last trade in this exchange, a chart of the average price of each year, and every offer, cheapest first. The State's offers are marked The State, yours are marked You.
- Sell gold — the form to put bars on sale.
- My offers — your offers in every nation, with the year they expire.
- Gold of the nations — for each nation: the State reserve, the active citizens, the reserve per citizen, the gold had against its cap, and whether its mine is Working, Stopped: cap reached or Not built.
The i button on the page opens a short guide with the same rules. When you carry at least one bar, a small gold bar counter appears under your money in the top bar (and a Gold bars line under Money in the side bar on a computer): tap it to open the Exchange. The State of the Nation tab in Politics has a Gold Reserve box with the nation's reserve, its bars on sale, its gold had against the cap and its mine.
Buying Gold
- Open the Exchange in the nation where you want to buy.
- Tap Buy next to an offer.
- Choose how many bars (you can buy just part of an offer) and the exchange desk. The form shows the total.
- Tap Buy again to confirm.
- You pay price × bars + the desk fee, with the cash on you. The fee is rounded up to the next whole dollar.
- The seller always gets the full price. The fee goes to the desk you chose.
- The State's offers are bought the same way, from any desk. Their price goes to that nation's treasury.
- Your My Money ledger records the purchase as Gold bought, and the seller's as Gold sold.
| Purchase | Desk | Fee | You pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 bar at $10,000 | State desk, 5% | $500 | $10,500 |
| 1 bar at $10,000 | Bank desk, 2% | $200 | $10,200 |
| 3 bars at $10,000 | Bank desk, 3% | $900 | $30,900 |
| 1 bar at $12,345 | State desk, 5% | $618 (617.25 rounded up) | $12,963 |
If two players try to buy the same bar at the same moment, only one gets it. The other is told that someone was quicker, and no money is taken.
Selling Gold
- Only the bars on you can be put on sale. Bars in your safe deposit box have to come out first.
- Choose how many bars and a price per bar, a whole number within the allowed prices.
- You can have at most 3 offers open at a time, across all nations.
- Bars on sale stay yours until someone buys them. They still count in the 5 you can carry, but they cannot be robbed.
- Buyers can take part of your offer. You get the full price in your pocket, wherever you are at that moment.
- An offer keeps its price: if the reference price moves later, your offer doesn't change.
- Withdraw takes the bars back on you, but only while you are in that nation: that is where the bars are.
- An offer nobody buys closes by itself after 2 game years, and the bars come back on you, even if that takes you above 5. Things To Do and the bell warn you a year before.
Exchange Desks and Fees
Every purchase goes through an exchange desk of the nation you are in. The buy form lists them, cheapest first, and you can pick any of them.
- The State desk is always open. Its fee is the Exchange Desk Fee law: 3 to 10%, whole numbers, 5% at launch. Parliament votes it like any other rate, and the Prime Minister can decree it. The fees go to the treasury.
- Private bank desks. The owner of a Private Bank who holds the Economics Degree can open the bank's desk in Corporate → Bank Settings → Exchange Desk, at 2 to 5%, or keep it Closed. The fees go into the bank's funds. The panel also shows the year's operations and fees, and the other open desks of the nation.
- An heir without the Economics Degree finds the bank's desk fee frozen: the desk keeps working, but the fee can't be changed. A bank whose owner has left the game keeps its fee too.
The Reference Price
There is one reference price for the whole world. It started at $10,000 and follows real trades:
- At every year change it moves towards the median price of the purchases of the last 30 game years (each bar counts the same; the game keeps the last 50 purchases).
- It moves by at most 5% a year, up or down.
- With fewer than 5 purchases it doesn't move.
- Every purchase counts, the State's included.
Example: the reference price is $10,000 and players buy 5 times at $12,000. At the year change it becomes $10,500 (+5%, the most it can move), and the allowed prices become $5,250–$21,000.
The reference price decides the allowed prices of new offers and gold laws, and what your gold is worth in your wealth, in the inheritance tax and in a divorce.
Carrying and Storing Gold
| Where | Limit | Can be robbed? | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| On you | 5, counting the ones on sale | Yes: 1 bar per Robbery | Needed to sell, deposit or travel |
| On sale | Counts in your 5 | No | In that nation's Gold Exchange |
| Safe deposit box | No limit | No | Only in the bank's nation, not from jail |
- Gold bars don't use backpack slots.
- To bring gold to another nation, carry it there yourself. Travel with the bars on you (up to 5). During a trip, the nation you are leaving counts.
- Safe deposit box: in Finance → Safe Deposit, Put in and Take out. You can only do it while you are in the nation of the bank, and not from jail. You can take out as many bars as you have room for on you.
- If the box closes, the gold comes back to you. That holds however it closes (you close it, you can't pay the rent, the bank removes it or shuts down), even if it takes you above 5 and even if you are abroad or in jail.
More on boxes in Banking & Loans.
Robbery
- A successful Robbery takes 1 gold bar from the bars the victim carries, on top of the cash. A victim with no cash but with bars on them still loses a bar.
- The robber needs room for it: a robber who already carries 5 can't take the bar, and is told so.
- Pickpocketing never takes gold. Bars on sale or in a safe deposit box can't be stolen.
All the crime rules are in Crime & Justice.
The State's Gold and the Gold Laws
Each State keeps its gold reserve. Only Parliament can move it, with three gold laws, found in the law menu under Gold Reserve (secret ballot):
| Law | What happens if it passes |
|---|---|
| Sell Gold Reserve | N bars leave the reserve and go on sale at price P. The offer never expires. |
| Buy Gold | The State buys the cheapest offers in its exchange, up to N bars and price P. |
| Withdraw Gold Sale | Every unsold State bar comes back into the reserve. |
- Secret ballot. While a gold bill is open nobody sees the counts or who voted: every MP and every Lord only sees their own vote. The result is revealed at the year change, together with its effect.
- A gold bill never closes in the middle of the day. Once everyone has voted it closes at the next year change; otherwise it closes when it expires after 2 years, like other bills (absent MPs are expelled as usual). At elections, gold bills that everyone has already voted on close first, with the outgoing Parliament.
- One gold bill at a time per nation, among the three.
- Gold laws can never be decreed. Only that nation's MPs (and its Lords, as for every bill) vote on them.
- Bars per law: 20, or 10% of the reserve if that is more, but never more than a quarter of the reserve (at least 1). With the reserves right after the launch (44, 56 and 37 bars) that is 11 for Vitalia, 14 for Dynamis and 9 for Fortis. The limit is checked again when the law takes effect: if it has dropped, fewer bars move.
- Price: within the allowed prices when the bill is proposed. If the reference price has moved by the time it takes effect, the price is brought back inside that day's range, and the nation's diary says so.
- Buy Gold only buys from players' offers in the nation's own exchange, from the cheapest (the oldest first at the same price), as far as the treasury can pay. A treasury at zero or in debt buys nothing. The State pays no desk fee; each seller gets the full price and a report.
The Gold Mine
The Gold Mine is a public work, built by Parliament like the others: a bill, a vote on where to build it, then construction.
- One per State. $75,000 to build, $10,000 a year in upkeep.
- Dust and noise: residents of the ring right around it lose 5 health a year. Nothing on the ring beyond.
- It works while the nation has had less gold than its cap (starting reserve plus every bar mined). At the cap it stops by itself, and the upkeep is still paid. It restarts by itself when the number of active citizens grows.
- It opens Gold Miner posts. Every finished Gold Miner shift counts, and when enough shifts are done a new bar is born in the State reserve.
Shifts per bar. The gold left to mine is the cap minus the starting reserve. The first half of it takes 10 shifts per bar, up to 80% it takes 20, and the rest 30. With Vitalia's cap of 120 and starting reserve of 48, there are 72 bars to mine: bars 1–36 take 10 shifts each, bars 37–58 take 20, bars 59–72 take 30. The cap moves with the active citizens, so these numbers can change.
Only whole bars are announced, to the miners and in the nation's diary. If the mine collapses or is demolished, the Gold Miners lose their posts.
Gold Miners
Gold Miner is a State job, under Job Market → State Jobs, wherever the nation has a Gold Mine.
- No degree, and no limit on posts or shifts. You can apply while the mine is working.
- A shift takes about 3 hours (Car + Fuel speed it up). It costs the usual Energy of a shift plus 20 health, taken when the shift starts, and you need at least 50 health to start one. Stopping a shift halfway doesn't give the health back.
- Pay per shift is the nation's Miner Wage law, from the treasury. At the launch it was set to each nation's State Jobs Wage: Vitalia $400, Dynamis $150, Fortis $100. Parliament can vote a new one (at least $10, no maximum), or the Prime Minister can decree it.
- The pay grows with your experience (up to ×2), your education and your happiness, minus income tax, like other State jobs. There is no ×3 bonus. You claim it by hand when the shift ends.
- The bars go into the State reserve. Your shifts help the nation mine its next bar, and you are paid the wage.
- If the mine stops at the cap you keep your post, but no new shift can start until it restarts. If the mine is gone, the post ends. Moving to another nation, or passing the dynasty to your heir, ends it too, like any job. No shifts from jail.
Members of Parliament
- Seated MPs, the Prime Minister included (not the Lords), can buy and sell at most 2 bars in total per mandate, counting the ones they have on sale.
- The limit lasts until the end of the mandate, even if they lose their seat. At the next elections it starts again from 0 for the new mandate.
- An offer put on sale before getting the seat can still be sold, and it counts.
- Voting on a gold bill also gives the limit, until that bill closes at the latest.
- Selling to the State through a Buy Gold law counts too: an MP who has used their 2 bars is skipped.
- The Exchange shows MPs their limit: how many bars are used, how many are left, and until which year.
Gold, Your Heir and Your Family
With an heir
- Your heir keeps all your gold: the bars on you, in your box and on sale.
- The inheritance tax counts your gold at the reference price. Whatever your money can't cover is paid in bars (rounded down), into the reserve of the nation that collects the tax: first the bars on you, then the ones on sale, then the ones in the box.
Without an heir, or deleting your account
- The bars on you go to the reserve of the nation you are in.
- The bars in a safe deposit box go to the reserve of the bank's nation.
- The bars on sale go to the reserve of that exchange's nation, and your offers close.
- Your tombstone says where they went: Your N gold bars went to the gold reserve of…
Divorce
- A forced divorce costs 25% of your total wealth, and your gold counts in it at the reference price.
- The part that your cash, your companies and the cash in your box can't cover is paid in bars to your ex (rounded down), even if that takes them above 5.
- With an NPC spouse, those bars go to the reserve of the nation where the one who pays is.
If a player is banned, their offers are withdrawn and the bars go back to them.
Gold and Your Wealth
Your gold counts at the reference price wherever your wealth is counted: the dynasty Rankings, the social classes in National Statistics, and the wealth points of your family tree (Tycoon title included).
Gold in the Treasury
| Treasury line | Type | When |
|---|---|---|
| Gold Sales | Income | A player buys from the State's offer |
| Exchange Desk Fees | Income | A purchase goes through the State desk |
| Gold Purchases | Expense | The State buys with a Buy Gold law |
| Gold Miner Wages | Expense | Gold Miners' shifts |
| Gold Mine Upkeep | Expense | Every year, while the mine stands |
Gold the State puts on sale brings money in only when a player buys it.
Why Can't I…?
…buy an offer
- It is in another nation's exchange: you can only buy in the nation you are in.
- You have no room: 5 bars on you, counting the ones on sale.
- You don't have enough cash on you for the price plus the desk fee.
- It is your own offer.
- You are an MP and have used your 2 bars for this mandate.
…sell
- Your bars are in the box: take them out first.
- You already have 3 offers open.
- The price is outside the allowed prices.
- You are an MP and have used your 2 bars.
…withdraw an offer
- You are not in the nation of that exchange. Go there, or wait: after 2 years it comes back to you by itself.
…use my safe deposit box
- You are not in the nation of the bank, or you are in jail. Taking bars out also needs room on you.
Tips
- Keep the bars you don't need to carry in a safe deposit box: no limit, and nobody can rob them.
- Compare the desks before buying: a bank desk at 2% saves $300 a bar against the State's 5%.
- Prices can differ from one nation to another. Each exchange has its own offers and its own last price, and you only see the offers of the nation you are in.
- Selling? Keep an eye on the 2-year expiry: Things To Do reminds you a year before.
- A robber can only take the bars you carry, so keep on you just what you need to sell, deposit or bring abroad.
